Re-Engineering the Role of Leadership in Nurturing and Navigating Talent Management in Academia

Abstract

In an academic landscape challenged by fierce competition for talent, academic institution leaders must adopt innovative approaches to stay competitive and effectively manage their talent. Talent management should be strategically focused and catalyse performance, supporting the fundamental capabilities of the institution. The primary objectives of academic institutions encompass attracting high-caliber staff, fostering academic excellence and cultivating robust research outputs. However, the leadership in many academic institutions grapple with significant employee turnover, necessitating a reengineering of their roles to navigate the complex terrain of talent management. This chapter redefines leadership's role in nurturing and navigating talent management in academia. Additionally, it underscores the importance of embracing diversity and inclusion, leadership competences, embracing talent management metrics and collegiality as strategic roles for academic leaders to navigate the talent management landscape within a dynamic and competitive environment.
