Youth Entrepreneurship in Africa

Abstract

Africa undergoes a profound demographic transition as the number of its youth exhibits a significantly rapid rise. In this context, entrepreneurship serves as a major opportunity to harness this demographic dividend and to foster economic development. This chapter explores the role of youthful populations in driving economic growth in Africa. It presents the conceptual framework of youth entrepreneurship and uses four case studies to assess the economic impacts of African entrepreneurship policies. In all cases, entrepreneurial initiatives have contributed to generating positive economic outcomes. The four countries, notwithstanding, face significant barriers impeding the sustainability of their economic growth. At last, this work identifies the challenges young entrepreneurs encounter in their endeavors and provides practical recommendations to inform public policy. These include introducing inclusive governmental policies, enhancing access to education and funding schemes, building supportive entrepreneurial ecosystems, and creating favorable regulatory frameworks.
