Workplace civility climate and its relationship with organizational citizenship behavior and intention to stay among nurses

Abstract

BACKGROUND: A workplace civility climate is a critical factor in shaping healthy nursing work environments. It influences nurses' organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and intention to stay, yet evidence from many healthcare systems, including Egypt, remains limited. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the workplace civility climate and its relationship with OCB and the intention to stay among nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was employed with 136 nurses from a hospital in Ismailia Governorate, Egypt. Data were collected using the Perceived Workplace Civility Climate Scale, the OCB Scale, and McCain's Intent to Stay Scale. RESULTS: Nurses reported moderate-to-high workplace civility, with the highest scores in the policies and procedures dimension. OCB also demonstrated a high overall level, particularly for altruism and courtesy. Intention to stay was moderate. Significant positive correlations were found between the total workplace civility climate and both OCB and the intention to stay. CONCLUSION: A positive workplace civility climate was correlated with higher OCB and greater intention to stay among nurses. Strengthening policies, reinforcing civil communication, and enhancing leadership practices may support retention and foster supportive work environments.
