Wireless charging for electric vehicles

Abstract

This chapter provides an extensive overview of inductive charging technologies suitable for charging electric vehicles, which is found to be the most appropriate for charging batteries of EVs. The working principle and components of the charging system were presented for stationary and dynamic inductive charging. In addition, the various architectures of the transmitter and receiver pads are presented, compared, and discussed. The different compensation networks and converter topologies that are used in IPT were presented, and their characteristics were compared. Additionally, the development and research (D&R) activities related to stationary and in-motion IPT were mentioned and explored, along with the associated challenges and opportunities concerning the technology. This effort provides a comprehensive guideline for inductive charging that will help researchers and engineers to approach and understand the technology.
