Waste Management and Logistics for Biomass Supply Chains

Abstract

The transition to renewable energy sources has increased the focus on biomass as an alternative source of energy. The success of biomass supply chains relies on efficient and effective waste management practices. This includes the efficient collection, processing and transportation of diverse waste streams such as municipal solid waste, agricultural residues and agro-industrial by-products. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the key components of biomass supply chains, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in waste management and logistics. It explores the various types of biomass feedstocks, their potential for biofuel production and the technological innovations that are necessary for their effective utilization. Additionally, the chapter reviews advanced supply chain modeling techniques, including mathematical programming, heuristic methods, multi-criteria decision analysis, geographic information systems and simulation models, which are essential for optimizing the complex processes involved in biomass supply chains. This chapter aims to contribute to the development of sustainable biomass supply chains that support the global shift towards renewable energy.
