Utilization of Library Serials Resources by Library and Information Science Students of Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the utilization of serials resources by students in the Niger Delta University Library, Bayelsa State. Four specific objectives of the study and four research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research method was adopted. The population of the study was 379 students of the Department of Library and Information Science, Niger Delta University. The sample size was 30 respondents drawn from the study population, using convenient sampling technique. The study employed survey questionnaire (AULSRLISS) as instrument to gather data for the study. Frequency count, simple percentages and tabular presentation were the statistical tools used. The findings of this research were: serial resources available in the study area are journals, newsletter, magazine, CD-ROM, and yearbook directories; most respondents use serial resources on high extent, moderate extent, and low extent; the purpose of respondents using serial resources is for examination, research, assignment, and to get current information; and Challenges faced by students while using serial resources are lack of borrowing facilities in the serial section, poor attitude of the staff to users (students), inadequate reading facilities in the serial section, and power failure/interruption. The study recommended that the library management should expedite action on the online data entry because when it is fully accomplished it will facilitate quick and easy information access in the Serials library; and Institution libraries in Nigeria should form a consortium to have a shared responsibility to some of the problems inherent in the acquisition of serials.
