Using Virtual Reality to Simulate a Classroom For Online Learning

Abstract

With the rise of E-learning as a means for people to learn from their homes, many have taken to applications such as Zoom or Blackboard, two examples of the biggest E-learning platforms today, to engage with their teachers and peers. Recent developments have proven how inefficient using these methods are, both for abled and disabled people alike. From a lack of body language, an unfamiliarity with the environment if the regularly used medium is a traditional face-to-face classroom, to cases where certain students are only able to rely on online learning due to their inability to attend traditional classes. This paper aims to provide a solution that allows for students and teachers to access an environment that is familiar and adaptable, while also serving as a crutch to certain disabilities, not entirely replacing other solutions, but rather presenting itself as a means to assist therapeutic and healing solutions already being applied. By using Unity and utilizing Meta’s avatars Software Development Kit (SDK), Photon’s Voice and Fusion2 multiplayer SDK and a multitude of other plugins, this paper has managed to develop a solution that is meant to operate on Meta’s series of Quest virtual reality headsets. Using that, one can partake in classroom lessons and activities, regardless of age group, grade, or disability.
