Usability and instructional concerns in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD)

Abstract

The different functions, objectives, and postulations of learning resources mean some users need guidance to use them effectively.This study examined the usability of the OALD, one of the most popular learners' dictionaries, to understand the dificulty it poses to user access and how it supports learner instruction.The investigation, made from an instructor's point of view, aimed to assess the OALD's standards for lexical accuracy and organization, examine the editorial processes for consistency in entries, and investigate cross-platform variations in features and content presentation.Framed in Norman (2013) User-Centered Design Theory (UCDT), the study used a comparative qualitative method to analyze 26 purposively sampled datasets of the OALD, stratiied into 7 themes.All versions were considered, but digital ones were sampled.Findings revealed many incorrect examples accompanying lemma descriptions, several inaccurate word descriptions, spelled-out alphabetic ordering, article-ignoring alphabetization, and bibliographic alphabetization.Orthographic errors, such as wrong punctuation, were identi-ied.All versions do not contain identical content; for instance, print and app versions use syllable-break markers to aid pronunciation, while the web version omits them.These indings establish the need for instructor guidance in adopting and using English dictionaries in language teaching.Dictionary makers, especially OALD staff, will ind them helpful in preparing future editions and updating the app and web versions.While this study focused on lexical entries from usability and instructional standpoints, future studies may examine phonetic representations, etymological accuracy, graphical consistency across platforms, or other gaps identiied here.
