UML Functional Aspects in Business-to-Business: Some Lessons Learned

Abstract

In the early stages of software development, identifying, addressing, and resolving design issues is crucial to enhancing software quality and reducing costs. Techniques such as use case modeling and Unified Modeling Language (UML) scenario engineering have gained prominence in the elicitation of requirements, specification development, and the creation and interpretation of design documents. In recent years, Business-to-Business (B2B) collaboration has emerged as a key driver for the success of modern enterprises, especially within the rapidly evolving e-business landscape. Although various Business-to-Business protocols have been designed to facilitate these interactions, a universally accepted standard has yet to emerge. UML has played a significant role in the development of business information systems. This paper presents insights and best practices for applying UML scenario engineering in creating sequence diagrams, scenario extension, and developing Business-to-Business systems.
