Total Cost of Ownership Evaluation of Alternative Fuel Vehicles in Morocco

Abstract

This study responds to the global imperative for a Net Zero Scenario by examining the prominence of alternative fuel vehicles as crucial alternatives to internal combustion engine vehicles. Emphasizing the substantial contribution of the transportation sector to worldwide CO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> emissions, the research underscores the pressing requirement for environmentally friendly options in Morocco. The study fills a critical void in existing literature by conducting the first comprehensive economic comparison of hybrid-electric, battery-electric, and fuel-cell vehicles against internal combustion engine vehicles in Morocco. The total cost of ownership results reveal a key trend, emphasizing the pivotal role of the initial acquisition in shaping overall economic considerations. In Morocco, conventional gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine vehicles exhibit the lowest cost of ownership, with respective values of ∃43,188 and ∃45,449. Alternative fuel vehicles, specifically diesel and gasoline hybrid electric vehicle, have higher cost at ∃51,620 and ∃56,706. Battery electric vehicles show a cost of ∃67,005, while fuel cell vehicles have the highest cost of ownership, averaging ∃106,409, attributed to the high purchase cost. Future studies are encouraged to adopt a more comprehensive approach, analyzing vehicles over their exact lifespan and exploring the economic assessment of vehicles in Morocco on a per-kilometer-driven basis. These avenues contribute significantly to providing stakeholders, policymakers, and consumers with more comprehensive information for informed decision-making in the realm of sustainable transportation in Morocco.
