Abstract

Maintenance has now gained recognition as an engineering field that relies heavily on strategic thinking. In light of the fourth industrial revolution, which is centered on sustainability, businesses are increasingly adopting various programs and strategies to incorporate its concepts. Consequently, the manufacturing sector is faced with pressing concerns regarding the integration of sustainability principles throughout the manufacturing process, digitalization efforts, and ecological responsibility. This paper substantiates this claim through empirical evidence, providing several examples that illustrate the limited perspective on maintenance and its current implications.Advancements in Industry 4.0, opportunities arise to enhance the economic viability, environmental sustainability, and societal benefits of planned operations within the manufacturing sector. This essay aims to illuminate the evolution of technology maintenance by examining four generations of technology and their respective roles and impacts on product development. Understanding the various "industrial revolutions" as a series of progressive developments, building upon the ideas of their predecessors, leads to the emergence of more complex modes of production. It is essential to avoid isolating each revolution and instead consider them in a holistic context.
