The Nexus of Research, Policy, and Practice in Higher Education: Insights from Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa

Abstract

This study analyzes the research, policy, and practice nexus of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa. , and the challenges and opportunities for strengthening these links. The study employed a qualitative research design involving secondary data sources: policy documents, research publications, and reports. Findings reveal a weak and loosely connected nexus across all three countries, with policymakers often neglecting Higher Education Research (HER) evidence due to factors such as differing priorities and a lack of trust between researchers and policymakers. This has resulted in minimal contributions of HER evidence to policymaking. The study also identifies opportunities for improvement, including enhanced communication platforms and dedicated funding schemes. The study concludes by offering recommendations for fostering stronger collaboration and promoting evidence-informed policymaking in higher education institutions.
