The impact of training on the ophthalmic knowledge of nonophthalmic physicians at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu, Nigeria

Abstract

Background: Nonophthalmic physicians (NOPs) often lack adequate knowledge to diagnose eye conditions when patients with visual loss or red eyes seek initial consultations in various clinics. Correct diagnosis by these physicians is vital for prompt referral and triaging. This study assessed the impact of a 1-day training program on the ophthalmic knowledge of physicians at the Family Medicine Clinic of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, participants received a 1-day training on the causes of common ocular conditions, along with instructions on the instruments, materials, and techniques essential for ocular examination. Pre- and postassessment tests were conducted immediately before and after the training. Result: Of the 47 doctors who participated in the study, 11 were senior registrars, 31 were registrars, and 5 were medical officers. The mean pretest score of their knowledge was 14.57 (±1.791) compared with the mean post-test score of 19.45 (±1.791). The mean increase in the score was 4.88, and the difference between the pre- and post-test scores was statistically significant ( P < 0.001). Conclusion: Providing NOPs with training can improve their competence in evaluating patients with eye complaints, leading to enhanced patient care through early referrals. To maintain continuous progress in the delivery of eye care, periodic training and re-training of NOPs are recommended.
