The Impact of Corruption on the Effectiveness of Public Administration in Nigeria

Abstract

Despite the fact that corruption is a menace to the society, it has continued to flourish in the public sector of the country, thereby causing a lot of set back to the growth and development of the nation. This aroused the curiosity to carry out this research, which aimed at examining the impact of corruption on the effectiveness of the public administration in Nigeria. This paper discussed concepts of corruption and effectiveness of public administration. It also discussed the various forms of corruption that are obtainable in various aspect of public administration and how it has affected the effectiveness of public administration in Nigeria. In addition, the study discussed how corruption can be curbed in order to enhance effectiveness in public administration. The study however concluded that corruption has eaten deep into Nigeria’s public administration system and had cost the nation a lot. However, in order to proffer solution, this study recommended that government should allow antigraft agencies to operate independent of the reigning government; the government is also advised to eradicate the plea bargain culture; also advised to pay public and civil servant salary that commensurate with the service they rendered and they should be accorded welfare packages such as, health insurance, educational loans, workers’ housing schemes etc. In addition to these, the retiring officers should be paid all their retirement benefits; Lastly, government should continually sensitize and sanitize the public sector by orientating them about the grave consequence of corruptions and adequately punish offenders.
