The escalating Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak: A renewed imperative for global health security

Abstract

The ongoing Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak represents a serious and evolving threat to global health security, underscoring persistent weaknesses in outbreak preparedness, early detection, and response systems in fragile settings. Ebola virus disease remains one of the most severe viral hemorrhagic fevers, with high epidemic potential and significant mortality risk when not rapidly contained[1]. Recent outbreak reports from the World Health Organization indicate sustained transmission in affected regions of Central Africa, highlighting ongoing challenges in achieving timely containment and strengthening regional preparedness efforts [2].
