Technology and the Nigerian Youth: An Examination of the Impact of the Digital Double-Edged Sword

Abstract

Technological advancements have profoundly transformed the existence of Nigerian youth, presenting an array of both opportunities and challenges. The swift integration of digital technology has improved educational access, employment opportunities, social connectivity, and civic participation, thereby furnishing Nigerian youth with unparalleled access to information and economic prospects. E-learning platforms and digital entrepreneurship have fostered self-reliance and innovation. Nevertheless, the emergence of cybercrime, digital dependency, misinformation, and mental health challenges underscores the adverse consequences associated with technology. The proliferation of social media and enhanced Internet connectivity has facilitated increased political engagement while concurrently resulting in a decline in face-to-face interactions and cultural degradation. The theoretical paradigms of Technological Determinism, Social Construction of Technology, and Diffusion of Innovations offer valuable perspectives into these intricate dynamics. To alleviate the detrimental impacts while optimizing the advantages, there is an urgent need to implement digital literacy curricula and cyber security awareness programs. This article rigorously investigates the dualistic influence of technology on Nigerian youth, providing policy recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable technologicalengagement.
