Synthesis and Characterization Techniques for Nano-Hybrid Smart Coatings

Abstract

The advancement in nanotechnology has focused on the design, surface modification, characterization and evaluation of tiny NPs for different industrial applications. Owing to their good features, such as tunable structures, adhesion strength, surface hardness, biocompatibility and long term corrosion resistance, nanomaterials have gain wide spread attention in the synthesis and formulation of hybrid smart coatings. The concept behind coating technology is to protect the exposed metal surface from the outer corrosive environment, thus preventing direct contact with corrosive elements like air and electrolytes. As a result, a detailed overview on the synthesis routes and evaluation of nano-hybrid smart coatings are summarized in this chapter considering most importantly the self-healing mechanisms to form a barrier film against corrosion for a variety of metals and alloys.
