Sustainable Urban Transformation in Developing Countries: Discussions of a Study in Ghana

Abstract

Abstract The findings drawn from a diverse range of respondents in various professional roles within the urban governance and planning sector revealed significant insights from the study in Ghana. The analysis of each construct demonstrates their individual and collective impact on the sustainable urban governance and planning (SUG&P) framework. For instance, LC is underscored as pivotal, with actions like establishing a mission statement for achieving SUT being crucial. GGP is shown to be integral, emphasizing principles such as effectiveness, participation, equity, and accountability. Furthermore, the research delves into the constructs of GE, highlighting the importance of effective waste management and protection against natural hazards. The role of BE is also examined, focusing on strategies like land degradation prevention and redevelopment of industrial lands. CI, while identified as a weaker construct, is still acknowledged for its role in incorporating cultural elements into urban development. Statistical tools such as exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) are employed to validate the reliability and relevance of these constructs. The study confirms the adequacy and distinctness of these constructs, ensuring a robust framework for understanding SUG&P in SUT. This research highlights the need to prioritize significant variables within each construct while acknowledging the role of less significant variables in enhancing the effectiveness of SUG&P in SUT implementation. This study not only underscores the critical role of these constructs in achieving sustainable urban development but also lays out the interrelations and impacts of various elements within the SUG&P framework, offering valuable insights for stakeholders in the field of sustainable development.
