Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in fisheries is emerging as a vital tool for promoting sustainable practices in marine ecosystems. Overfishing, bycatch, and illegal fishing activities have long threatened fish stocks and biodiversity, leading to environmental degradation and economic instability in coastal communities. AI offers innovative solutions by enhancing monitoring, management, and decision-making processes in fisheries. One of the key applications of AI is in real-time monitoring and data collection, where machine learning algorithms analyze vast amounts of data from satellite images, drones, and underwater sensors. These systems can track fish populations, migration patterns, and illegal fishing activities, providing precise and timely data to regulatory agencies. AI-powered predictive models further support sustainable fishing by forecasting stock levels and helping fisheries managers set appropriate quotas based on accurate, dynamic data rather than historical averages. Additionally, AI improves the selectivity of fishing methods, reducing bycatch— the unintentional capture of non-target species. Automated systems using image recognition and species identification tools enable vessels to avoid sensitive areas and target specific fish stocks more efficiently, minimizing ecological impact. Another crucial aspect is the role of AI in optimizing supply chains within the fisheries industry. Overall, AI holds significant potential for addressing the global challenge of unsustainable fishing.
