Abstract

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a major public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where these infections contribute significantly to postoperative morbidity. Nurses are vital in wound care, however, their adherence to standard guidelines can vary due to knowledge gaps and resource constraints. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses regarding SSI within a tropical setting to promote improved patient outcomes. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 328 nurses across two referral hospitals in Osun State, Nigeria. Data were gathered using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire evaluating sociodemographic details, knowledge about SSI, and clinical attitudes. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, employing chi-square tests to determine significant associations.
