Studying the early age of the mortar using ultrasonic control to assess attenuation and velocity

Abstract

In modern civil engineering, the monitoring and control of structures is essential to ensure their longevity and safety. Ultrasonic non-destructive testing has emerged as a promising technique to assess the structural health of materials. This study focuses on the use of ultrasonic testing to analyze the aging of a mortar sample with a composition of cement/sand = 0.5 and water/cement = 0.65. Specifically, the study investigates the attenuation and velocity of the mortar sample by transmitting a P-wave with a center frequency of 5 MHz and positioning two transducers on each side along the same axis. The analysis of the evolution of the attenuation and velocity parameters of the transmitted signals allows for the identification of the early age of the sample. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the use of ultrasonic non-destructive testing as a reliable and effective method for monitoring and controlling the aging of mortar samples in civil engineering applications.
