Urbanisation is a process linked to environmental pressures, including the degradation of wetland ecosystems. Various stakeholders participate in this urbanisation process and interact with wetlands in different ways. Human perceptions largely influence how wetlands are valued, affecting their protection and conservation. Using perception theory, this study examines the views of stakeholders who use the Seven Dams Conservancy (SDC) in Bloemfontein, South Africa, to evaluate the threats facing the wetlands. Employing a qualitative, perception-oriented approach informed by phenomenological principles, the study seeks to understand the phenomenon of urban wetlands through participants’ perspectives. Data was gathered through interviews, observations, photographs, and document reviews. Findings indicate that the SDC wetlands are appreciated for different values, including spiritual enrichment, educational purposes, purification, and flood control; and officials appreciating the wetlands for their contribution to Bloemfontein's green and blue infrastructure. Threats include development, improper zoning, sewage, pollution, and lack of conservation efforts. The study concludes that perceptions are complex and cannot be addressed in a linear way. They require participatory and collaborative approaches that consider the needs and aspirations of different stakeholders. Stakeholders’ diverse backgrounds and visions for the SDC lead to conflicts over wetland protection and conservation.
