We report the stabilisation of otherwise fleeting iron(III)-oxo dimers in the interlayer space of a natural layered clay. The material shows a good photocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of formic acid in water and formaldehyde in air comparable to a benchmark TiO<sub>2</sub> photocatalyst.
