Smart Suitcase for Visually Challenged Individuals in Airport Environments using UWB and LiDAR Fusion SLAM: Morocco Case Study

Abstract

This paper proposes an autonomous indoor navigation system for visually challenged individuals during air travel, based on tracking their indoor local position and mapping a route to their desired destination. The system operates through the fusion of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) positioning with Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm in smart suitcases to provide obstacle detection and independent navigation to visually challenged individuals. A case study is considered at Fez Saiss airport in Morocco, where the proposed system is simulated and analyzed for its efficiency.
