Recently, smart and multifunctional materials have been at the core of high-performance systems spanning extensive technological fields, including healthcare, sensors, structural health monitoring, energy harvesting or storage systems, and environmental applications. Shape memory polymers belong to a class of smart materials capable of reversible shape transformation and return to their original shape by activation from any external stimulus. Smart Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) have garnered significant interest due to their unique ability to recover pre-defined shapes upon exposure to external stimuli such as heat, light, moisture, or electric fields. This comprehensive review presents recent advancements in SMP research, emphasizing the interplay between molecular structure, cross-linking density, and activation mechanisms that govern shape memory behavior. A detailed analysis is provided on current processing methods , fabrication techniques , and the incorporation of functional fillers and hybrid systems to enhance material performance, including thermal stability, responsiveness, and multi-stimuli adaptability. Furthermore, the review highlights the extensive application potential of SMPs across biomedical devices, aerospace, robotics, and self-healing systems. Despite promising progress, challenges remain in scalability, durability, and real-world integration. This article also outlines key challenges in commercialization and identifies critical research directions aimed at bridging the gap between laboratory-scale innovation and industrial-scale deployment. Overall, the study underscores the transformative potential of SMPs in developing adaptive, intelligent, and sustainable technologies for next-generation systems.
