Simulation and Analysis of PV Energy Harvesting Using Boost Converters

Abstract

The efficient harvesting of photovoltaic (PV) energy requires advanced power electronics and robust control strategies to maximize energy transfer to the load. In this chapter, we explore the simulation of PV energy harvesting using a boost converter in MATLAB/Simulink. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm is implemented to ensure optimal energy extraction from the PV panel under varying irradiance conditions. The simulation evaluates the boost converter's input and output characteristics, including voltage, current, and power, using two irradiance profiles: a smooth Gaussian profile representing a clear day and abrupt irradiance changes simulating a non-clear day. Results demonstrate the converter's efficiency and adaptability, providing insights for practical applications in renewable energy systems.
