Serum Neuron-Specific Enolase and S100β Protein as Serum Biomarkers of Brain Injury to Classify Outcome after Pediatric Sepsis

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate serum neuron-specific enolase and S100β protein as biomarkers for the detection of brain injury in pediatric sepsis and mortality. Background Septic-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common manifestation of sepsis, which associated with higher rates of mortality. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 45 septic cases admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Pediatric Department, Menoufia University Hospitals and 45 apparently healthy children. NSE and S100β protein serum biomarkers were measured by ELISA kits in the second day of sepsis diagnosis and patients were followed for a month.
