Role of Nanotechnology in Concrete Corrosion Prevention

Abstract

Nanotechnologies are being integrated into intelligent concrete, representing a significant advance in the construction industry, with benefits ranging from improved structural performance to improved air quality. The construction sector is calling for intelligent concrete, as traditional concrete suffers from a lack of durability and concrete efficiency. To counter this, intelligent concrete combined with advanced nanotechnologies, possessing self-detecting and self-healing properties, will enable it to recognize damage at an early stage and seal cracks. Researchers are investigating ways of reducing the carbon footprint of concrete by replacing clinker and using alternative binders. This chapter will present smart technologies in the concrete construction sector based on the maintenance of structural conditions and construction methods with a focus on autonomous crack repair properties. The influence of nanomaterials on mechanics, long-lasting autodetection function, self-repair, and self-adapting reinforced cement highlights the potential of smart concrete to transform building methods. The use of nanomaterials such as phase-change materials and thermal insulation nanoparticles can improve energy efficiency, leading to a reduction in heating and cooling energy requirements. In addition, these materials extend the lifespan and reduce the maintenance requirements of nanotechnology-based intelligent concrete structures, helping to reduce the number of materials used, the generation of waste over time, and the emission of greenhouse gas. The challenges and perspectives are also discussed in this chapter.
