Role of Nano-Bioceramic Bone Graft on the Healing Process of Unfavorable Mandibular Angle Fracture (An experimental study)

Abstract

Introduction: The most frequent fracture is a mandibular angle fracture, whichis challenging to treat because there is no established universal technique. So, fordiverse implant systems, different kinds of plates have been developed. Aim: Thisstudy aimed to evaluate of nano bio-ceramic bone graft with 3D bone plate on thehealing of unfavorable mandibular angle fracture. Material and methods: This studyincluded 18 male adult mongrel dogs, animals were divided into (9 of each): studygroup (I) where the angle fracture treated by 3 dimension bone plate with Nano bioglass bone graft. Control group (II) where the angle fracture treated by 3 dimensionbone plate only. Noncritical size bone defects (3 mm diameter) were created in themandibular angle of the dogs. Bone density was measured in the vicinity of thefracture line using the cone beam (CBCT). Results: Dogs were euthanized at 3, 6 and12 weeks postoperatively, six dogs at a time, three dogs from each group. All of the 18fracture line healed uneventfully. Soft tissue healing normally proceeded without anysigns of infection. Post-operative assessment of the current study revealed no obviouscomplications; neither post-operative infection nor wound dehiscence was detected inany case. The synthetic Nano bio glass bone graft was bio compatible and non- allergic.CBCT showed that measurements of the bone density reading were increased in studygroup more than control group throughout showing highly significantly reading after12 weeks. The measurements of the bone density were higher in the study group thancontrol group throughout the whole study intervals. Conclusion: 3D Titanium plateshave superior biomechanical properties and biocompatibility when used in treatment offractures of the angle. Nano bio glass bone graft is a compatible material and doesn’tinterfere with the healing process of fracture filed.
