Revolutionizing Connectivity in Wide-Area Measurement Using Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Modulation Technique

Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is currently reshaping industries and societies worldwide leading. At the forefront of this revolution is the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. One of the key drivers of the ICT sector that can be beneficial for electrical grids is the communication system. This paper aims to use the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique as a 5G modulation technique for wide-area measurement in electrical grids. The proposed OFDM technique is applied to the IEEE 14bus system. The simulation and analysis were performed on MATLAB software. Several metrics have been measured to evaluate the effectiveness of the OFDM technique in comparison to previous techniques. These metrics include the bit error rate as a function of varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the peak-to-average power ratio at the same value of SNR, and the power spectral density. Finally, the proposed OFDM technique was applied to transfer electrical power at a certain bus. The results indicated that the input and output data are closely matched to each other.
