Abstract

Gomphrena celosioides Mart (G. celosioides) is a promising medicinal plant commonly known as bachelor’s button. Traditionally, all the parts of G. celosioides Mart are used for different folkloric medicinal purposes. This review sought to provide a detailed update on G. celosioides Mart, with the goal of synthesizing data from different sources on its medicinal values, phytochemistry and toxicological effects. This paper also provides information on the ethnopharmacological relevance of G. celosioides and scientific experimental evidence that is useful to prioritize the plant and certain phytocompounds found in it that may be new drug leads. All relevant information regarding G. celosioides Mart were retrieved from textbooks and electronic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, and Semantic Scholar) using the search term “Gomphrena. celosioides Mart”. Analysis revealed the identification of various classes of phytocompounds from different parts of the plant. In addition, data on extracts of G. celosioides Mart through in vivo and in vitro studies gathered on this appraisal demonstrated pharmacologic activities including anti-diabetes mellitus, anti-microbial, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, diuretics, hypertension, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic, thus giving credence to its folklore. In light of the available evidence, it can be said that G. celosioides Mart is a valuable medicinal plant worthy of consideration for clinical experimental studies. Further research is needed to validate the other folklore claims and explore the bioactive compounds responsible for reported pharmacological activities in extracts.
