Review of challenges and opportunities in Vehicle Routing for Hydrogen Transportation Logistics

Abstract

This paper examines the challenges and chances concerning the hydrogen transportation, with a particular focus on optimizing road-based delivery using the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) framework. We discuss the unique logistical and technical constraints posed by hydrogen’s physical properties, safety requirements, and infrastructure limitations regarding the different methods of routing transporting hydrogen . The study emphasizes the critical role of integrating Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) models into hydrogen distribution logistics, where optimizing delivery routes under operational constraints—such as time windows, vehicle capacity, and refuelling requirements and the characteristics of hydrogen as a chemical component. —significantly enhances network efficiency and reduces overall transportation costs. Furthermore, the paper reviews recent advances in solution methodologies, including exact, heuristic, and hybrid approaches, and emphasizes the importance of emerging technologies and predictive analytics for dynamic route optimization. by addressing this elements , this research aims to contribute and initiate hydrogen transportation approaches encouraging the adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
