Nanotechnology involves manipulating the size and shape of the materials at the nanometer scale in order to create, produce, and use structures. Additionally, nanoparticles have already been used in numerous aspects of human existence. Nanocomposites already have produced a number of advances that may find use in the food packaging industry. The shelf-life of many different types of food is anticipated to be significantly increased by the application of nanocomposite compositions. Less material is required to achieve the same or superior barrier qualities, which can result in lighter packages. These days, chitosan nanocomposites, which combine chitosan with inorganic or organic nanoparticles in the nanoscale, are receiving a lot of attention. Following processing, food commodities are typically packaged and moved hygienically to protect and preserve them from any unpleasant changes, especially in the level of amount before it is provided to the consumer. Additionally, food packaging has been noted as one of the most recent advancements in material technology and science, which also represents a more significant aspect that may affect customer demand. A high level of food product with the following important qualities, such as an extended shelf life, natural quality, little processing, assured safety, and minimal processing, is typically requested by consumers today, according to observations. Therefore, there is a need to look for a cutting-edge and environmentally friendly technology that may greatly develop the field of food packaging, particularly through the science of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Numerous aspects of food science, including processing, storage, packaging, functionality, and food safety, have undergone significant change as a result of breakthroughs in nanotechnology. Numerous nanomaterials, including inorganic metals, metal oxides, and their nanocomposites, along with nanoorganic material combined with bioactive compounds, have been used in the food business. This chapter aims to give comprehensive information on recent developments in the use of nanochitosan in the food packaging industry. Furthermore, detailed information on the application of nanochitosan in food packaging is also highlighted.
