Rebuilding Higher Education Systems Impacted by Crises

Abstract

This chapter aims to compare and contrast the experiences and responses of three universities in Africa that have faced different forms of wars and conflicts. The chapter collected data through textual analysis using a qualitative comparative case study methodology. The study compared and contrasted the experiences and reactions of three African institutions that have dealt with various types of wars and conflicts using Savo Heleta's idea of higher education in post-conflict situations. The chapter also discovered that by promoting dialogue, critical thinking, social cohesion, and respect for human rights in the participating countries, higher education has significantly contributed to post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding. This chapter seeks to add to the body of knowledge on higher education in conflict-affected contexts and offer suggestions for improving the adaptability and value of higher education in these situations. As suggested in this chapter, governments should work together with a variety of stakeholders.
