Radon in Groundwater of a Nigerian Tertiary Institution: Assessing its Health Effects on Consumers

Abstract

High radon content in groundwater has continuously been of public health concern due to its carcinogenic potential. High groundwater radon concentrations as high as 116.2 Bq l<sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-1</sup> were recorded in the study area. The host aquifer type and well depths have been suggested as possible contributors to high radon concentration. The maximum contamination level advised by the EPA was exceeded by the average radon concentration. Both the ingestion and inhalation radiation doses that were studied are higher than the WHO's individual dose criteria (IDC) 0.1 mSv y<sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-1</sup>.
