Quality of life of patients with COVID-19 infection undergoing cardiac surgery

Abstract

Background The effects of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on quality of life (QOL) have been reported in different populations. Objective to describe effect of COVID-19 on QOL of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and its associated factors in Egypt. Participants and methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 patients with COVID-19 waiting for cardiac surgery. The socio-demographic and quality of life data were collected. The COV19 – Impact on Quality of Life (COV19-QOL) was used to measure QOL of COVID-19 patients before cardiac surgery. Student’s t-test was used for testing significance between groups. Results The mean overall QOL score was 4.0±0.43. Multiple linear regression showed that female patients (β=0.17, P=0.001), body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 (β=0.21, Pβ=0.21, Pβ=-0.23, Pβ=-0.29, P Conclusion QOL scores were greatly affected, especially for age greater than or equal to 40 years old, females, unmarried, low educated, unemployed, low-income, ejection fraction less than 40%, diabetic, hypertensive, and smoker patients. A prospective study is recommended to highlight the effect of COVID-19 and impaired QOL on outcome of patients.
