Public Policy Responses to Microbial Infections and Their Implications for Socio-Economic Development in Nigerian Communities

Abstract

Microbial infections remain a significant impediment to socio-economic development in Nigerian communities, creating a complex web of health and economic challenges that perpetuate poverty and underdevelopment. This comprehensive review examines the multifaceted impact of infectious diseases on Nigeria's developmental trajectory, drawing on recent epidemiological data and economic analyses. The evidence reveals that Nigeria contends with a heavy burden of bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, compounded by alarming antimicrobial resistance trends including high rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales. The economic consequences are substantial, with antimicrobial resistance costing billions and resistant infections requiring significantly higher treatment costs compared to susceptible infections. At the household level, infectious diseases impose substantial financial strain, with malaria affecting a large proportion of households and out-of-pocket expenditures dominating healthcare financing. The poverty-disease cycle remains firmly entrenched, particularly affecting rural communities, women, and vulnerable populations. This review identifies critical gaps in health system infrastructure, including limited diagnostic capacity in secondary facilities and widespread antibiotic misuse, while also documenting successful community-level interventions. Policy recommendations emphasise strengthened regulatory frameworks, enhanced preventive healthcare investment, multi-sectoral approaches, and targeted interventions for high-risk populations to break the cycle of infection and underdevelopment.
