Production of Hydrogen from Biogas: A Review

Abstract

In recent year, a number of scientists have expressed interest in the biogas production from biomass degradation because it is created during the anaerobic breakdown of plant and animal wastes, which essentially consists of increased levels of carbon (iv) oxide and methane (CH4). Traditionally, Hydrogen in its large-scale production is carried out by chemical industry's use of light hydrocarbon reforming, primarily natural gas. Nevertheless, the technologies currently employed for reforming face a number of scientific and technical obstacles that rely on the purity and use of H2 as well as the quality of the raw materials, efficiency of conversion and security requirements needed in the integration for production of H2. An alternative CH4 source for reforming processes is biogas, a high potential, versatile raw material. Producing H2 from renewable sources, like biogas, contributes significantly to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In view of this, an essential path toward producing clean energy with increased energy efficiency is the combination of biogas reforming procedures and fuel cell activation with H2. This study elaborates on a review of the literature on biogas reforming technologies, highlighting the several kinds of fuel cells that are available, the benefits of each approach, and the primary challenges encountered.
