Power system stability enhancement using wind–battery hybrids in the GADA Special Economic Zone

Abstract

The demand for reliable and sustainable energy has led to the development of hybrid power solutions to improve stability with multiple energy sources. This study designs a hybrid power system with a grid, a 42 MW wind turbine, and a storage battery to improve stability and ensure critical load supply during faults within the GADA Special Economic Zone (GSEZ). It examined three scenarios: a grid-side fault, a sudden drop in wind generation, and a sudden load change. For the grid-side faults, three configurations were tested: grid-only, grid with wind, and grid with wind and battery. The analysis results showed that grid-only and grid–wind setups experienced voltage and frequency drops, causing load disconnection. In the grid, wind, and battery hybrid system, 61.3 MW is supplied from the wind and the battery at the grid fault, shedding 104.7 MW to keep the system frequency and voltage within the range, and the critical loads remain connected. The results demonstrate that the hybrid system helps maintain stability. During a wind fault, the grid handled all load demands, ensuring no disconnections. In the 50% load reduction scenario, the system adjusted the power from the grid and wind to maintain stability. Consequently, the hybrid configuration exhibited superior stability compared to other setups during grid-side faults.
