Potential Utilization of Urine for Power Production

Abstract

The human urine can serve as an alternative energy source that will benefit the society. Fossils fuel like coal are being reduced as an energy source due to climate change thereby other energy source that are environmentally friendly are been produced. Human urine is considered a waste from the body not knowing it could be useful for the immediate future. From the electrolysis process, electricity can be gotten in a simple and effective manner. The urine undergoes electrochemical reaction. Electrolysis of urine breaks down the urea at 0.37 Volts into oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas moves into the water filter for purification and then moves into the liquid borax solution for removal of dirt and moisture from the hydrogen gas. The dried gas is then stored in the gas cylinder where it is compressed into Compressed Hydrogen Gas (CHG). The Compressed hydrogen gas is used to run the generator. When ignited with a torch, the hydrogen gas produced blue flame. The mean production rate of hydrogen fuel from 1L of urine is 3.024 kg/hr. The hydrogen gas is a clean energy due to zero emission when used to run 1.8 KVA generator with mean voltage value of 209.64 Volts. Hydrogen fuel production from human urine is a substitute to conventional liquid fuel (petrol) based on its efficiency which is 93 % when used it to run 1.8 KVA generator, hence it serves as a means of wealth creation from waste.
