Portulacaria afra, also known as elephant bush or dwarf jade plant, is a succulent plant native to South Africa which is commonly used as a houseplant due to its small leaves, plump stems and ease of care. The plant prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining soil and should be allowed to dry out slightly between watering. It is drought tolerant and can survive long periods without water, but it will not thrive in soggy soil. It is propagated from stem cuttings, which root readily. Portulacaria afra is considered non-toxic to humans and pets. Additionally, it has an excellent tolerance to pruning and can be shaped into different forms. It is susceptible to mealy bugs, spider mites and scale insects.
