Pharmacovigilance Research: A Bibliometric Performance and Science Mapping Analysis Using the Scopus Database

Abstract

Background: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is essential for drug safety, but its global development, thematic evolution trends, and collaborative networks are not yet fully mapped. Methods: A bibliometric analysis of Scopus-indexed articles and reviews published between 1960 and 2024 was carried out. Metadata was analyzed using VOSviewer 1.6.20 and the Bibliometrix R package to assess publication trends, influential authors, institutions, countries, co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence patterns, and thematic evolution. Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Walktrap clustering were used to map the conceptual structure. Results: A total of 8624 documents were included in the study. Global PV output has increased markedly in the last two decades, with China, the United States, India, and France leading in productivity. Co-authorship networks revealed moderate international collaboration, with emerging economies making a notable contribution. Keyword co-occurrence clusters highlighted major themes, such as adverse drug reactions, PV systems, oncology-related drug safety, and COVID-19 vaccine surveillance. Thematic mapping indicated a shift from foundational ADR reporting to advanced analytical and technology-supported PV methods. Conclusion: PV research is expanding worldwide, with increasing contributions from both high- and middle-income regions. The field demonstrates growing thematic diversification, particularly in oncology and infectious disease PV. Strengthening international collaborations, expanding PV capacity in underrepresented regions, and integrating advanced data analytics are key priorities for future research and policy development.
