Peroxidase-like properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone‑zinc oxide nanoparticles towards glucose colorimetric sensing

Abstract

Herein, polyvinylpyrrolidone-stabilized zinc oxide nanoparticles (PVP-ZnONPs) were prepared and evaluated their enzyme-like properties and for colorimetric detection of glucose. The prepared PVP-ZnONPs were spherical with 13.2 ± 2.1 nm particle sizes determined from TEM. The enzyme-like properties of PVP-ZnONPs were evaluated and a colour change from clear solution to orange confirmed the oxidation of o -phenylenediamine (OPD) to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). This was due to reactive oxygen radical species (ROS) generated catalytically by PVP-ZnONPs and H 2 O 2 . An intense absorption peak at 450 nm due to DAP was observed, thus confirming that PVP-ZnONPs possess peroxidase-like activity. The PVP-ZnONPs showed excellent colorimetric glucose sensing with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.31 μM and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.02 μM. The selectivity towards glucose was excellent compared to other sugars such as fructose, fucose, lactose, and sucrose. Glucose could be detected in serum samples with excellent %recoveries ranging from 95.3 to 108.4%.
