Participant Observation as a Qualitative Research Method in Management Sciences

Abstract

Certainly, selecting the appropriate research methodology remains a primary concern for all social science researchers. Among the less commonly used methods is participant observation (PO), considered a qualitative research approach. By using ethnography as a theoretical framework and adopting a systematic literature review approach, this chapter aims to discuss the significance and use of PO as a research method in management sciences. The main results indicate that the PO method is frequently considered in the literature as a research method to enhance analysis by providing access to the field and valuable insights into the studied objects. However, it also entails certain challenges and limitations that we have highlighted to ensure its utility, credibility, and optimize research results.
