Optimizing Delivery Routes using OpenStreetMap data and Dijkstra's Algorithm in Casablanca, Morocco

Abstract

Urban logistics encounter considerable challenges due to Environmental concerns, Traffic congestion, and rising delivery demands. The use of Artificial intelligence (AI) and geographic information systems (GIS) technologies serves as a smart solution to tackle these problems. In this regard, this study focused on the city of Casablanca, Morocco, presenting a data driven approach to optimize delivery routes by using open-source geospatial resources with Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm. The primary objective is to identify optimal paths between delivery hubs and target destinations combining Operations limited by initial pickup and final delivery. The approach consists of processing OpenStreetMap (OSM) data to build a road network graph, where intersections are modeled as nodes and road segments as edges. Dijkstra's algorithm is used to identify the most efficient routes. The findings offer a comparison between the optimal routes and the classic ones, highlighting the potential of integrating geospatial and algorithmic solutions to transform urban delivery systems.
