Optimized irrigation through solar desalination: Exploring the impact of water temperature in wastewater treatment and phosphate fertilizer removal

Abstract

Could rationalizing irrigation techniques be accomplished with solar desalination? This practical and theoretical study explores the optimization of a solar desalination unit employing the novel Humidification Dehumidification (HDH) method to evaluate its potential in irrigation to provide an answer to that topic. The performance of the system is examined in the first section of the research concerning raising the evaporator temperature and the ensuing temperature difference. The daily distillate production rate for the HDH system is 25 kg/m², and the results show that it has a global efficiency of 58 %. Using wastewater and saltwater polluted with phosphate fertilizers, the HDH system is evaluated in the second section of the study. The findings show that more than 98 % of ionic species were removed, besides presenting a potentially effective response to the complicated water treatment issues facing the agricultural industry.
