Optimal Sizing of a Microgrid Based on PV-Wind: A Case Study of a Resort in Matruh Government, Egypt

Abstract

This study analyzes and designs a renewable energy system to power a small resort in Marsa Matruh, Egypt. The analysis considered both the characteristics of the energy demand and the meteorological data for the area. The micro-grid was optimized using the HOMER program in both on-grid and off-grid modes. In off-grid mode, the system utilizes photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbines to generate the required load needs. Grid-connected mode connects the photovoltaic panels to the main power utility. The simulation was carried out to decide the best scheme for efficient energy system for the particular load. The grid-connected mode, which included both PV panels and the main grid, proved to be the most successful micro-grid design, according to the data. The micro-grid's energy cost was calculated to be $0.015/kWh, with an initial capital expenditure of $30,294.49, an annually running cost of $285.27, and the complete net current estimate of $33,982.36. The system used 80.34% renewable resources from the overall energy needed.
