Operational Insights and Energy Efficiency Assessment of a University Chilled Water System

Abstract

This study analyzes the performance of the University of Houston’s chilled water system (CHWS) over a twoyear period (June 2023-June 2025), revealing seasonal energy trends, operational inefficiencies, and potential improvement areas. The results show high energy consumption during the summer despite reduced campus occupancy, as well as efficiency losses in part-load winter operations. The peak load briefly exceeded the available capacity in Spring 2025, indicating a need for better staging and maintenance planning. These insights form a practical foundation for future system enhancements informed by real-world performance.
