Onboard Railway Energy Storage Control using Model Predictive Control for Energy Braking Recovery

Abstract

In this study, an energy management system for an onboard energy storage system (ESS) in a railway traction system is developed. The objective is to control the state of charge (SOC) of a supercapacitor (SC) in order to ensure regenerative braking energy (RBE). The mathematical model of the system is developed and the control strategy is designed using the model predictive control (MPC). The numerical simulation is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. As results, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed MPC controller compared to the Proportional Integral (PI) and Fuzzy Logic (FL) controllers in terms of reference tracking and accuracy.
