This paper investigates a backstepping control (BSC) strategy for controlling the machine side converter (MSC) and grid side converter (GSC) for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based Wind Turbine System (WTS). Both MSC and GSC mainly use PI controllers. However, these controllers are highly sensitive to different disturbances, such as modelling errors and system parameters variations. To enhance system robustness and achieve the maximum power point (MPPT), BSC have been adopted for PMSG-based WTS. The proposed control scheme for WTS is modeled in MATLAB/Simulink environment to validate its effectiveness under the wind variation conditions. The comparison results between the proposed BSC and PI controllers are provided to prove its advantages.
